The Theory of Evolution
The theory of evolution is based on the fact that certain traits are passed on more frequently than other traits. These traits make it easier to live and reproduce for individuals, so their number tends to increase with time.

Evolution is an organic process

Macroevolution takes a long time to complete and is only evident in fossil records. Microevolution is, on the other hand is a process that occurs much faster and can be observed in living organisms. Microevolution is driven by genetic selection and mutation that are smaller scales than macroevolution. It can also be enhanced by other mechanisms such as gene flow or horizontal gene transfer.
Evolution is based on chance
The idea that evolution occurs by chance is an argument that has long been used by those who oppose evolution. But this argument is flawed, and it is crucial to understand the reason. One reason is that the argument conflates randomness and contingency. This is a mistake that is rooted in a misreading of the nature of biological contingency as described by Stephen Jay Gould. He claimed that genetic information does not grow in a random manner, but is influenced by past events. Brendan Sweetman’s book is an attempt to give a balanced and readable introduction to the relationship between evolutionary theory to Christian theism. He is more of a patient than a flamboyant writer which is in line with his goals, which include disentangling the scientific value of evolutionary theory from its religious implications and cultivating the ability to think clearly about the controversial subject.
The book might not be as comprehensive as it should be however, it provides an excellent overview of the debate. It also makes it clear that evolutionary theory is a firmly-proven scientific theory that is widely accepted by experts in the field and deserving of a rational acceptance. The book isn’t as convincing when it comes down to the question of whether God has any role in the evolution process.
